God has given each person unique talents, gifts that can be used to reflect His love to others. ABCS volunteer Rafael is doing just that, using his passion and skills to bless families in the Southwest Region. Rafael is a barber and hairstylist in Yuma, Arizona, serving men, women and children in his community. On his days off, he often chooses to give back by offering free haircuts to those who need them most. Several ABCS staff members are regular clients of Rafael’s, and they also share a church community. In the past, Rafael has partnered with ABCS to host outreach events, providing free haircuts for clients.
These moments are about more than a haircut. They offer dignity, restore confidence and bring hope to those who may be lacking it. When individuals like Rafael step forward and say, “Here I am! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8), lives are touched and Heaven rejoices. His heart for service continues to inspire the entire ABCS Yuma team.
Restoring Dignity
One day, a man named Stephen* called the ABCS office in Yuma. He and his two sons were experiencing homelessness and living on the street. Stephen wasn’t just looking for resources. He was determined to build a better future for his family. When he called, he asked for a job. There were no openings available. Fortunately, he already had an upcoming interview, but without clean clothes and a haircut, he felt unprepared. Though he offered to work in exchange for help, the staff gently reminded him, “This is God’s provision. You don’t have to earn it.”
Immediately, they thought of Rafael.
Without hesitation, Rafael stepped in. He came to the Yuma New Life Pregnancy Center, set up his chair and provided haircuts for Stephen and both of his sons. His simple act of kindness gave them more than a fresh appearance. It restored a sense of dignity and confidence as they prepared for what was ahead.
More Than Haircuts
As Stephen’s 12-year-old son waited quietly for his turn, he asked a staff member, “Can I have a Bible?” They placed one in his hands and in that moment, the love and truth of Jesus were shared with all three of them.
The dedication of everyday believers with practical skills like Rafael shows us the power of the gospel to change people’s lives. God can take any talent and turn it into a way to spread the gospel.
