ABCS Weekly Devotional: Living Our Lives for a Why

We’ve asked a few different people to tell us about their “why” in their ministry area, today we hear about Arms of Love Foster Care from Debbi Baker, Director of Arms of Love Foster Care – Maricopa County.

Where there is no vision the people perish; but he that keeps the law, happy is he. – Proverbs 29:18 KJV

Jason Johnson says, “People will work hard for a what but will give their life for a why.” As I meet with new families and seek to encourage those I lead, the most important and telling question I ask is “why do you want to do Foster Care?” Truthfully, when I was first asked that question my answer was that God had called me to do whatever I was asked to do at ABCS in order to minister to hurting families and children. Since then I have come to understand that as Arms of Love we exist to provide children who have been neglected and abused with safe, loving and Christ centered homes. Everything that we, or our families, do has to be viewed through the filter of that why. Without a clear understanding and passion for our God-given purpose (our why), we will most likely give up when the job becomes more difficult than expected and the children whose care we have been entrusted with will pay the price. However, if we remain true to the purpose God has called us He is able to bless abundantly so that in all things at all times, having all that we need, we will abound in every good work.
